SPAI/NASSA Instructor Certification Program
SPAI / NASSA Instructor Certification Program for Skateboarding
*Certification not available for surfing until 2009

Requirements for Instruction Certification

Instruction will include the Zero To Hero techniques and video classes and the following requirements:

Risk Management Workshops
All participants must complete a SPAUSA Risk Management Workshop that will cover park safety, general safety guidelines and instructor guidelines as they relate to interaction with students.

CPR and First Aid
All participants must complete a certified CPR and First Aid training program.

Background Check
All instructors will have to submit to a background check

Letters of Recommendation
All instructors will require 2 letters of recommendation that will attest to their integrity and ability to work with youth.

Proof of Ability to Ride
All instructors will need to submit footage of their riding ability plus any print work they have. This includes magazine, newspaper and photographs.

Areas of Certification
Freestyle, racing, park, street, mini-ramp, bowls and vert

SPAUSA Instructors Course will cover:
  • Risk Management
  • Sexual Harassment
  • Discrimination
  • Reporting abuse to proper authorities
  • Safety as it applies to each discipline
  • Proper use of safety equipment
  • Teaching techniques
  • Coaching at all levels
  • How to hold a contest
  • Judging a contest
  • Events and Grand openings of skateparks
  • Spectator Safety

SPA International will hold a conference every year for Members to attend and share information.

Level 1 Instruction Certification
Instructors should have 3 years min experience in their area of expertise.
Level 1 covers instruction for beginner; skateboarders, BMX riders and Inline skaters
Training will cover the basics of learning to ride, safety, proper stance and basic maneuvers.
Emphasis will be on safety, proper use of equipment and safety gear, learning to fall and avoiding hazards.

Level 2 Instruction Certification
Instructors should have a min of 3 years experience and be riding at an advanced level to apply for this certification.
This will certify instructors to teach up to the intermediate level and will cover more advanced maneuvers including basic tricks, airs, spins, grinds, grabs, and beginner racing techniques.

Level 3 Instruction Certification
Instructors should be riding at the pro-am level in their area of expertise with an average of 5 years experience.
Instructors will teach advanced maneuvers including big airs, spins, advanced trick maneuvers and racing at the professional level.

Level 4 Instructor Certification
Instructors will be certified to teach instructors and must be riding at the pro level.
Candidates will need to submit a resume, video footage of their riding ability and 3 letters of recommendation by people in their area of expertise.
The course will cover liability issues, training techniques and proper use of safety equipment.
